The power of magical thinking: Before I got into photography, I went dogsledding in the Alaska backcountry with my old friend Bob James. For no good reason I brought a toy Holga camera. I even managed to snap a handful of shots from a sled moving at breakneck speed, the film stiff in the cold and scraping against the plastic innards of the camera. I'd thought it would work like magic. A couple times it did. I published a story about the fraught trip in The Atlantic's May 2012 issue.
